Rachel (Greta) Jaques

Birth: She was born in 1885 at St. Paul, Minneosta.

Family Information: Married to Albert Jaques.

Mother of Eleanor, Rachel Mary, Alice, Albert Jr., Frank, Chester and Ida Jaques.

Description:

Pre-Colony History: In 1900 she was living with her parents and siblings in California.

In 1910 she was living in California with her husband while he worked as a machinist at a planing mill. In 1920 the couple were still in California and he still worked as a machinist (in a machine shop) and they had 4 children.

Came from California with her husband and their five surviving children in October 1921 (another baby was born after their arrival). The family had been paying on their membership for several years, so they were paid in full when they arrived.

Home in Colony: Lived in the main colony at Newllano for at least two years, as there are several mentions of the family at the Montessori school, in theater productions, helping out at the hotel, etc.

Later lived at the colony Rice Ranch.

Job in Colony: Was an expert seamstress, even holding a degree in sewing.

Other Info:

Post-Colony History: They left for unknown reasons sometime before 1926, moving first to Kinder then to the Senator Odom Pecan Farm at some point before her husband's death on June 20, 1926.

According to family sources, she was asked to leave the farm following Albert's death, so she and her five surviving  children drove across the United States in either a Model A or Model T Ford, over questionable roads and alone. She supported her family by working as a housekeeper and seamstress.

In 1930 she was living in California with four of her children and working as a seamstress in a dress shop. In 1940 she was still in California with two of her children, and she was a modiste with her own business.

Death: She died in 1968 in San Diego, California.
